Concord

The city of Concord, the state capital of New Hampshire, is nestled onto the banks and the valley of the Merrimack River.  Located in the central part of the state, with a population around 43,000, Concord was founded by Europeans around 1720.  The lands prior to the founding were occupied for the previous 3,000 years by the Pennacook tribes of the Abenaki people.

New Hampshire's State Capital

Main Street, the central thoroughfare of the downtown district, has the flavor of 19th century architecture. The domed capitol built in 1819, has the sole distinction of being the oldest capitol where the legislative bodies still meet in their original chambers.  Main Street is dotted with distinct brick buildings being built or renovated  which house a variety of locally owned shops, restaurants, and businesses.  The value of Main Street as a pedestrian way has not gone unnoticed by the businesses who have plans on the drawing board to make it even more pedestrian friendly and attractive.

Concord has the air of a friendly small town, from it's Saturday morning farmers market in the shadow of the capitol building to it's pond ice hockey tournament in the depths of winter.  The city neighborhoods still have the distinct feeling of the eras of growth over the history of their years. Centrally located, it affords it's citizens and tourists an easy commute to the White Mountains, the beaches of the seacoast, and the lakes region of the state.
